"Kateryna" is one of the most renowned paintings by Taras Shevchenko, created in 1842. It depicts the tragic fate of a young woman, the protagonist of his eponymous poem. In this work, Shevchenko condemns the immorality, deceit, and cruelty of landlords—referred to as "Moskals." The painting also stands as a protest against societal prejudices and the harshness of the era. This masterpiece has become iconic in Ukrainian culture and is well-known not only in Ukraine but far beyond its borders. The painting is preserved in the Taras Shevchenko National Museum in Kyiv.
