Lutsk is the administrative, business, political, and cultural center of Volyn Region - the heart of Greater Volyn.
The first written mention of the city dates back to 1085 in the Hypatian Chronicle. However, archaeological research suggests that the city is much older and already over 1,000 years old.
Lutsk was a powerful princely city; an important multi - confessional religious center; the nearby Zhydychyn Monastery became a center of Christianity even before it was officially adopted as the state religion; the second (southern) capital of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, Ruthenia, and Samogitia; and the site of the Congress of European Monarchs in 1429, which became an important stage in the development of European diplomacy.
Lutsk is a city where history and modernity are closely intertwined. It is a city that is actively growing and developing. Historically and mentally, Lutsk is a European city located on the border with the European Union.
